Your city and civ grow around a few basic stats.

Hammers - hammers are your basic unit of building, the more hammers you have, the faster you will build.

Beakers - beakers are your science unit, and allow you to study your researches faster, these are used for the whole civ, from each city.

Growth - growth is the measure at which your farms and tree fruits grow, this is helpful for a farming or cottage-based society.

Happiness - happiness is an overall boosting stat, it will come from living in "fun" or pretty biomes, and gives a boost to every other stat.
