Crops can be harvested by right clicking on a ripe crop. They can also be harvested with a waterfal drop method.
Smart production and use of Grand Exchange sales can give a good daily income for your city.
Farms are only one player for planting and require direct sunlight to grow.
Each Biome can grow a different set of crops, you can check with the /biome command. This will list out all crops that can be planted on a farm in this biome.
The /biome crop command can be used like /biome crop wheat. This will tell you all the different biomes that are able to grow this crop.
These two commands will allow you to plan out your Farm biome goals before you build them, to maximize the types of crops you want to grow.

Raids are prevented from griefing a farm, but people can sneak in possibly and harvest (right click) your crops. Protect them well.
